My Weight Loss Journey...

I lost 91 pounds in three years. Yes, 91 pounds!!

That’s like toting around an adult German shepherd (to give you an idea), plus a few extra pounds…all day! Geez Louise, can you say exhausting?!? Just for the record, I am not a doctor, nor am I a fitness or nutritional expert. I just figured out what worked for me. If you’re interested in getting started or feeling lost, then hopefully these tips I share will help you on your health journey.

I have always been up and down with my weight since I was a young girl. When I hit my late teens, I started different diets, even some all-natural diet pills. I’d always lose a fast twenty pounds and then gain back 40 pounds faster than I lost it! I’d go to the gym now and then, but I didn’t know what I was doing. I managed to stay around 200 in my early 20’s, but then I started working at a pizza and beer place.

I went from 200 pounds to 260 pounds.

260 pounds... I was at my highest weight. I was 28, and due to a particular situation, I had to start looking at my life differently. The pressure and pain that my body felt at that weight are indescribable (Side note: it’s why I remind myself daily to keep moving forward). I had a friend Mike that offered to help me out. We met and went over a plan that we thought would work. He was finishing school and needed a test client. I quit after two weeks; I wasn’t ready to put in that much work. I think the hardest part at the beginning for me was taking the time to dedicate to myself. Three months later, in January 2014, I mustered up the courage to ask for a second try. When I first started on my fitness journey, I was embarrassed to work out at the gym, so Mike offered to train me at his apartment. Back then, 30-minute cardio with light weights was about all I could do. Jumping jacks, burpees, and high knees were not my friend!! Two months later, Mike told me I had to start going to the gym, “Nobody is going to be looking at you, Tasha!”. So, I quit… for like a day and then I said okay. The anxiety of the gym, and what people would think of me was high. But slowly, I got over it and just focused on what I was there to do, get healthy, get fit!!

I worked out three times a week for an hour.

I monitored my food, using an app called MyFitnessPal. I decreased my consumption of alcohol, and I stopped eating pizza, french fries, and ranch dressing daily (mind you, I worked at a pizza place). As dramatic as my weight loss was, it was merely watching my diet, exercise, and a lot of hard work. Maybe some blood, sweat, and tears too!!

My tips and suggestions for you:

  • Start slowly; there is no need to rush.

  • The tortoise won the race, not the hare. Slowly eliminate something out of your diet. Maybe going to the gym twice a week is all you can do, that’s okay.

  • Find an accountability person. Someone who isn’t going to let you slack, someone who can be your cheerleader, and your drill sergeant. They exist. Seek, and you shall find.

  • Drink Water, yeah that’s what everyone says. But seriously, find a water bottle you fancy, and water will become your new BFF. Trust me.

  • Find an app that helps you track your caloric intake, and be more mindful of the food you are eating and its nutritional value. You'd be surprised how fast you lose calories when you are more aware!

  • Be kind to yourself. It takes 21 days to create a new habit.

  • Lastly, I'll leave you with this little motivational saying I found when I first started: "It takes four weeks for you to notice a change, Eight weeks for friends and family to see, and twelve weeks for the rest of the world to notice." Let the world see you!!
